London Borough of Sutton Cultural Place-making Planning

Tricolor were appointed in September 2019 to develop the London Borough of Sutton’s plans for cultural place-making.

We designed and undertook a borough-wide consultation programme directly involving community groups, businesses and residents to weigh up their views and perceptions and first of all discover and define the ‘essence of Sutton’ – what makes it tick. We then developed an innovative year-long cultural programme which would bring together Sutton’s reputation as a world class centre for cancer research and exploring the surprising and exciting connections between science, culture, everyday life and environmental responsibility.

As part of this process, we checked and challenged the Council to think big, creatively and innovatively. We developed three strongly interconnected themes directly inspired by and celebrating Sutton’s strong heritage of creativity, environmental awareness and scientific innovation.

Through the development of an excellent working relationship with the Sutton council team and our meticulous project management approach we were able to create a compelling community-led case supported directly by more than 7,000 local people on the online campaign, consultation with over 30 organisations representing more than 10,000 people for the Borough of Culture bid in just 5 weeks.

Sutton has been awarded one of the Mayor of London’s prestigious Cultural Impact Awards. The £200,000 funding will be used to deliver 6 of the events within the programme we designed.
