Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens Options Appraisal

Tricolor was appointed by Sunderland City Council to undertake an Options Appraisal of the Grade 2 Museum & Winter Gardens, a well-loved attraction in the heart of the City that sees c.340,000 visitors a year. The Council were interested in understanding how the Museum could function more effectively, particularly under the familiar strain of reduced local authority resources. As the City’s main library had also been co-located on the site, it was important to see how the two services could function together, to create a vibrant and sustainable heritage, learning and event space.

Sunderland has a growing student population and a series of new business ventures and growth areas that the City is keen to explore and capitalise upon. We reviewed the entire Museum operations and objectives, based on the Hallmarks of Prospering Museums developed by the Association of Independent Museums. Finally, building upon our assessments, we presented costed options to the City Council for short, medium and long-term development aims for capital works, programming and creating an inspiring, invigorating and sustainable Museum.
