Norwich Castle Keep Project Consultation and Engagement Strategy
Norwich Castle’s magnificent stone Keep is the centrepiece of the museum and art gallery complex. The Keep sits on top of a huge man-made Norman mound that dominates the city centre. Gateway to Medieval England is a four-year project that will reinstate the Norman floors and rooms in the Keep and, for the first time, enable access to five floor levels. New displays and activities will immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of Norwich Castle during its heyday as a royal palace. The development will open up the keep from basement to battlements.
Tricolor was commissioned as the Lead Activity Planners for this ambitious project, leading on consultation with volunteers, staff, stakeholders and community groups. Our role was to develop the ongoing programming for the Castle and generate a strategy for incorporating medievalism into all that the museum displays, not just its medieval history.
Using our co-productive workshop-based approach, we worked closely with the Castle team and volunteers and audience members to develop pilot projects for digital displays for Museums at Night, an interactive club for young people to explore the chivalry of being a knight and also to participate in a live archaeological festival. Tricolor was able to mobilise the capacity, skills and knowledge within our team to deliver the required product within a very tight timescale. As the client was not a heritage delivery organisation, we supported and mentored the project team to ensure they had the confidence and knowledge to co-produce the Activity Plan.
