What the course is about 

Audiences are central to the success of all heritage and cultural organisations and projects, but understanding and engaging them consistently does not come easily. This course will take you step by step through the process of understanding your current audiences, identifying potential audiences and how to set about engaging them with your heritage and maintaining that relationship.

Working with audiences is a relationship – this course will be geared to your needs but will set out in easy-to-follow steps just what you need to do to be understanding, attentive communicative and responsive. Like all relationships, the one with your audience needs maintenance!

By the end of the course, you will be able to create a basic audience engagement plan that you could use to inform your future plans as well as support initial applications to funders such as the National Lottery Heritage Fund or the Arts Council of England.

The course includes trainer-led, group, and individual activities and presentations. 

Who is it aimed at?

People who have little or no knowledge of audience engagement but want to find out more. This might include:

Students, fresh out of a Heritage BA or MA 
New professionals, including postgraduate students
New trustees
Non-heritage groups/individuals starting out on a new project 
People looking to expand their skills
Seasoned professionals looking to refurbish their audience knowledge and stay up-to-date with the latest developments

What skills will you come away with

You will have the confidence and skills to plan and undertake your own audience engagement. By completing this course you will know how to:

• Better understand the people who visit you, those you would like to visit and other potential audiences, and how to keep up with their evolving needs and expectations
• Undertake and analyse simple audience surveys to provide a benchmark of data
• Develop an audience engagement plan
• Evaluate your engagement
