Council for British Archaeology, 2018 – 2019


The Council for British Archaeology was established 75 years ago to be the voice for archaeology in the UK. Since then it has adopted a wide variety of roles, including commenting on planning applications, managing the very successful Young Archaeologists’ Club and running national advocacy campaigns. Major challenges to core funding streams since 2011 have required the CBA to become a more resilient organisation to ensure it can continue its work into the future.

HLF Heritage Grant Round 2 Activity Plan

Kenley is the most complete surviving Battle of Britain fighter airfield. The remaining assets on the airfield: the rifle range, fighter blast pens, complete perimeter track and fuel dump together create a unique opportunity to engage people with a crucial moment in British history and a pivotal battle of the Second World War. The airfield is still being used for glider flying, providing a direct and tangible link to its WW2 fighter airfield history.

HLF Heritage Grant Round 2 Project Conceptualisation, Governance Options Appraisal, Business Plan and Activity Plan

Working with Sunderland City Council and English Heritage, Tricolor was responsible for creating the Vision Statement for this medieval castle, set within a wooded Dene, which is being redeveloped into the first youth-led heritage and skill-building attraction in the UK.

HLF Project Conceptualisation, Business Plan, and Activity Plan

Tricolor has developed the full HLF Activity and Business Plans for the Trust in support of its Round 2 bid to excavate the remains of the historic 16thC theatre and then develop a thriving heritage visitor attraction at the site. Our role was to undertake a preliminary options appraisal with potential partners and advise on governance and management structures in light of their HLF bid.
